The seat for the 2032 battery in the garmin hrm has two contacts. If I can't find a reliable answer soon, I'll probably have to throw the Garmin HRM in the trash and look for a compatible HRM from Polar or another vendor that I thought you could only connect with a paired strap as well. About 40 mins into the run heart rate started dropping to 60 and below, then it just kept stopping to display anything. I swapped the battery for another one and nothing. Based on their offering for the existing soft strap (strap+transmitter together as the only option) I'm guessing not. My Edge showed "HR Monitor detected" and I had their heart rate information until we were nearly 20 feet apart.

I too am a licker. I didn't get any help at all from the Garmin site, and in desperation Googled "Garmin 305 heart rate monitor not working". After reading this blog, I changed my shirt to a cotton polo shirt. check my blog i put water on both sides of the connectors on the back(body side- ribbed part of the monitor).

I'm going to try the Polar strap and see if that works any better. I think Garmin should stop skirting the issue and do a thorough investagation of their heart rate technology . Will test my Mio Link against the Alpha, but it looks like the Ant link between sensor and Garmin 920xt may be the problem. Any ideas? The straps always start to give trouble after a few months, and none of the fixes (clean, tight, gel, etc.) seem to help long term. Very excited to go out for my pm workout later!
Can't believe it was such an easy fix. Thankyou so much, its only been a week and I was hating not having heart rate. Thinking about a possible 405 upgrade though. I thought it was the strap, so I called Garmin and they sent me a new one.
